Tostan began working in Mauritania in 2007 and has implemented the Community Empowerment Program (CEP) in a total of 90 communities, over three cycles (2007-2010, 2010-2013, 2013-2016.) In 2017, the office was delocalized due to structural constraints, though we continue to support the Community Management Committees (CMC) through follow-up missions.

Over the course of 2014, CMCs in Mauritania organized 212 community clean-up days, and 39 of them elaborated their action plans with local authorities. CEP participants adopted 4,850 people to share knowledge learned during class, through the organized diffusion method. In order to reach a larger audience, Tostan Mauritania used radio programs and inter-village meetings to share themes from the CEP. Through these activities, approximately 30,000 indirect beneficiaries were reached in 2011. To date, 356 communities have declared abandonment of harmful practices in Mauritania, at three public declarations.
