Tostan - About Us

Tostan Sweden

Tostan Sweden is a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization incorporated in Sweden in November 2004 to support Tostan’s work in Africa. Run by a nine-member board, Tostan Sweden has a large membership supporting its activities in a variety of ways, including donor outreach and fundraising. Many members have volunteered for Tostan in Senegal.

Generous donations from organizations and individuals in Sweden have enabled Tostan Sweden to fund Tostan programs in a number of villages in the Matam region of Northern Senegal. Tostan Sweden currently funds Tostan programs in five villages in this region.

In addition to its fundraising and donor outreach activities, Tostan Sweden visits universities, colleges, high schools, museums, and other locations to raise awareness about Tostan.

Tostan's relationship with the country of Sweden dates back to 2000, when the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) began providing critical support for key programs in West Africa. Tostan was also awarded the 2005 Anna Lindh Prize, established to honor the memory of the former Swedish foreign minister, Anna Lindh, who used her position in the European Union to speak out for human rights and social welfare. This recognition led to coverage in the Swedish press and an ever-growing relationship between Tostan and the Swedish people.
