Volunteer
Since 1991, over 300 volunteers have contributed their talents and time to
reinforcing the capacity of Tostan staff and supporting projects in the communities we serve.
We currently have a variety of competitive placement options for those wishing to volunteer.
There are many ways to get involved:
With a minimum stay of six months and the possibility to intern for two years or more, the Africa Volunteer Program is a great way to gain experience in a rapidly expanding organization while working to empower communities across Africa.
Tostan encourages applicants 18 years and older from anywhere in the world to apply. College/university students, recent graduates, and Master's and Ph.D. candidates are especially welcome.

Hours: Full-time
Current Needs:
Translation, journalism, information technology, management, training, library and archive management, writing/editing, and communications. Those with other talents are also invited to submit their applications.
Start Dates:
Tostan has scheduled orientation sessions for volunteers on the following dates.
2008
- January 15th, June 2nd, September 15th
Placements are unpaid and competitive.
Applications are accepted no later than two months prior to intended arrival date.
(Please note that we are unable to discuss placement opportunities with those who have not submitted a completed application.)
Internships in Washington, DC
Tostan also accepts interns at its Washington, DC location in support of Tostan's African offices. These positions require a minimum three-month commitment, with preference given to longer-term availability.

Hours: Part-time and full-time
Current Needs:
Translation, journalism, information technology, graphic design, writing/editing, and communications. Those with other talents are also encouraged to apply.
Application Dates: All 2007 positions are filled. Applications for Spring 2008 positions are due no later than December 15, 2007.
The positions are unpaid, competitive, and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Volunteer Placements for Career Professionals
Tostan also welcomes inquiries from career professionals who would like to apply their expertise and experience to a rapidly expanding grassroots organization. Because Tostan understands that longer stays may not be possible for some working professionals, the duration and terms of these placements are flexible and arranged on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, professionals may be able to volunteer their services remotely.

Other Opportunities
Not available to work in Africa or Washington, DC, but still want to volunteer for Tostan on a part-time basis? People across the US and around the globe have donated their time to Tostan in unique ways by presenting our organization to others, hosting fundraisers, and offering a few hours a month to help us with projects in their areas of expertise. For Researchers
Some Tostan volunteers have completed their own independent research while interning full-time in Africa. If you are considering such an option, please read our
research policy
prior to applying, and be sure to indicate your intention to conduct independent work on your application. Tostan cannot provide resources to interns or other researchers who have not made prior, specific arrangements with the organization well in advance of the research start date.
