Tostan Senegal
Tostan has a program whereby individual donors can make donations which go toward funding a Tostan program in one or more villages. When people contribute funds to the Adopt A Village program, they receive regular updates about the village they have funded. At this point, the Adopt A Village program is picking up speed as more people are hearing about Tostan’s successes. Further, Tostan is creating a system to organize regular updates for all donors.
Start Date: September 2010
Minimum commitment: 1 year
Hours per week: 20-30 hours/week
Location: Thiès, Sénégal with trips to participating villages (25 %)

Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain a database for all Adopt-A-Village projects, including donors, adopted villages, and statistics on Tostan centers in these villages; follow partial individual donations (not enough to entirely fund the project in a village)
- Communicate with the fundraising team in Washington, D.C. to maintain current and incoming information in the database (new donors, financial status, etc.)
- Write progress reports to the donors (at least 1 report/year/donor)
- Take photos and film during missions to the villages; create and maintain online photo albums and short films for the donors
- Initiate regular communication with national and regional staff to share information on the projects (village selection, arrival of funds, program implementation, other progress of AAV villages)
- Collaboration with the team in Washington, D.C. to create a marketing plan, create promotional materials, and other activities to support fundraising efforts
- Create and maintain donor webpages for each donor, where donors will eventually be able to receive all past and recent reports, photos, videos, as well as leave comments and ask specific questions
- Maintaining a AAV template for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year reports and portraits
Secondary Responsibilities

Initiate capacity-building activities for staff in ICT skills, report writing, statistical data collection and analysis, and English through trainings, workshops, and collaboration/critique

Help to develop an organization and communications system within Tostan to ensure that information is shared with the Executive and International Communications Teams

Write and edit reports, proposals, articles, etc. for Tostan Senegal, including translation when necessary

Maintain AAV internal website, with tasks, mission schedules, databases, etc.

Produce marketing materials such as logos, brochures, etc.

Qualifications and Necessary Skills
- Thorough understanding of Tostan’s programs and methodologies
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, development, management, or similar field required; Masters preferred
- Strong written and spoken proficiency in both English and French (writing samples required in both languages); national language skills desirable (Wolof, Pulaar)
- Ability to initiate the collection and sharing of information with staff and participants
- Excellent written communication; creativity, skills in formatting and page design desirable
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Knowledge and experience with photography and film desirable
- Capable of working with external stakeholders on planning and program implementation
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with Access or other database software preferred
- Knowledge of Gmail, Google Groups, Google Documents, Google Calendars, and other Internet programs preferred
- Ability to be persistent and diplomatic, and to establish mutual respect among Tostan staff, project partners, and local community members
- Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and to manage multiple tasks at once
- Flexible to adapt to a multicultural environment, to work in varied conditions, to be considerate of limited resources, and to adapt work priorities to the immediate needs of the project or donor
- Ability to travel independently
Benefits
As a non-profit organization who works to commit the maximum level of resources to our communities, we rely on volunteers to cover many of their own costs during their volunteerships. These costs include expenses such as travel between their home countries and work countries, medical costs, and other personal incidentals such as meals, personal travel, clothes, etc. We in turn do our best to commit to covering housing and weekday lunches for all of our volunteers.
