Since September 2008, Tostan has collaborated with the Nike Foundation on a three-year project entitled “ Empowering Communities to Empower Girls: Changing Social Norms to Unleash the Potential of Adolescent Girls in Senegal.”   The goal of the project is to improve the lives of adolescent girls in 50 communities in the region of Kaolack , Senegal , by demonstrating a model for empowerment and development through community-led shifts in gender roles and norms. A major strategy of this project is to leverage Tostan’s existing Community Empowerment Program (CEP) for even greater social change outcomes through the addition of new activities that focus on gender and gender norms. The Project Manager is one of two full-time volunteers assigned to this project and will oversee activities in all areas of the project; the second volunteer is dedicated to project monitoring and evaluation.

 

 

Start Date:  January 2011
Minimum commitment: 1 year         

Hours per week: 40 hours/week, but must also be flexible to work/travel on weekends depending on tasks

Location: Kaolack , Senegal with travel to villages (20%), Dakar and Thies, Senegal  (20%)

Direct supervisor(s):   International Coordinator, Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, & Learning (MERL)
Collaborator(s): MERL International, Kaolack Regional Coordinator, Nike MERL Volunteer, and other staff and partners at the local and national levels
 

Responsibilities

 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Write and edit reports, proposals, articles, etc. for the Nike Project, including translation when necessary
  • Communicate with the national and regional staff and the Regional Volunteer (RV) in the region, with the goal of defining roles and responsibilities and ensuring the maximum efficiency and best results for the project
  • Plan and execute missions to project villages; gather information through interviews, monitoring and evaluation reports, and other sources to write articles about the villages, their participation in the Tostan CEP, and their evolution over time; supplement the report(s) with photos and/or film
  • Submit project reports, meeting minutes, and status reports to Executive Team
  • Assist staff to professionally represent Tostan, including the implementation of miscellaneous public relations projects, such as producing publicity materials (in French and English) including PowerPoint presentations, brochures, films (if qualified); interact with visiting donors and project partners; etc.
 
Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Help to develop an organization and communications system amongst Tostan Senegal staff assigned to the Nike Project to ensure that information is shared with the Executive and International Communications Teams
  • Initiate capacity-building activities for staff in ICT, report writing, statistical data collection and analysis, and English through trainings, workshops, and collaboration/critique
  • Help to align volunteer resources with organizational needs by encouraging staff involved in project implementation to use the Volunteer Request Form and other applicable Volunteer Program procedures

 

 

Final Products
  • Electronic copies of all documents produced, edited, etc. to supervisor, incoming volunteer, and Volunteer Coordinator
  • Final narrative report of individual activities for internal distribution and adaptation for external use
  • Completed “Request for Volunteer” forms, submitted to the Volunteer Coordinator, as needed
  • Other, as requested by Executive Team, Volunteer Coordinator, and other immediate supervisors and collaborators

 

 

Qualifications and Necessary Skills
  • Bachelors degree in social sciences, business, management, or related field required
  • Master’s degree OR current enrollment in Master’s program (studies in International Development, Education, Gender Studies, Non-Profit Management, or Monitoring & Evaluation preferred ) OR At least two (2) years of professional experience either with a non-governmental organization / non-profit OR in Africa or other developing region
  • Thorough understanding of Tostan’s programs and methodologies
  • Proficiency in French and strong written and spoken English:   the project manager volunteer must be able to communicate orally with the project team in French, understand written French, and produce quality written reports for the donor in English
  • Capable of working with external stakeholders on planning and program implementation
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Experience with Access or other database software preferred
  • Knowledge of Gmail, Google Groups, Google Documents, Google Calendars, and other Internet programs preferred
  • Ability to be persistent and diplomatic, and to establish mutual respect among Tostan staff, project partners, and local community members
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and to manage multiple tasks at once as well as strong communication and organizational skills
  • Flexible to adapt to a multicultural environment, to work in varied conditions, to be considerate of limited resources, and to adapt work priorities to the immediate needs of the project or donor
  • Ability to travel independently
